Not a flaw in sight. The White Dog Resturant has a charming ambience. The owners are there to see that your experience is a good one. The paintings on the walls, done by Roslyn Pruitt, are wonderful. The music is well selected. The service is excellent. Whether I had the shrimp and gritts beautifully presented and delectable on the palette, the vegetarian special in a puff pastry that is like a treasure chest, or the carnivor special (thank you Max) which is so yummy that I wished I could druel, I found that I couldn't wait to come back and taste the next dish. The bread pudding is the best I have ever had. The prices are totally reasonable and my experiences have been delightful, decectible and delovely. By all means go and enjoy. I eat there every chance I get.

Pros: Ambience, Food, Service, totally wonderful experience

Nice atmosphere but the prices will keep me away. The food was not that good, especially compared to the price. Although it was nice to see some tweaks to regular comfort foods (I had macaroni and cheese as a side dish). Might be nice for a date where you are trying to impress with the size of the check. Make sure to grab the dog treats on your way out the door, but remember they're for dogs not people!

Pros: Nice ambience, good for a date.

Cons: Expensive, food not so great.

We went as one of our first date nights in Richmond (we do date night every week). We read a lot about this restaurant and expected a lot. However, coming from Philly, we have high expectations. The seats were benchs with no cushions, and the back of the seats were in a 90 degree angle. I was so comfortable the whole time, i could barely think about my food. I had to keep adjusting my seating just so that my tailbone didnt hurt so bad. The service was ok, ambience very rustic, and cramped to me. Food was good, very large portions. Real down and true southern. Not gourmet classy food. More comfort food, (ie cheesy grits?? i thought they only did this at waffle house..... i guess i have a lot to learn about richmond). Overall, it was ok. Stemware for the wine wasn't that great. I am a stickler for having the right stemware with the right wine. That was just a minor detail though. Not a place to get dressed up to go to. Don't think I would go back, although my steak was good.

Pros: steak

Cons: seating, ambience, stemware

The food was average to good. Service competent. However the owner played stupid when the cigarette smoke in the non-smoking area was pointed out to him. But I guess he couldn't tell because of the butt in his mouth.

Pros: Food

Cons: cigarette smoke in non-smoking areas

I've been to the White Dog twice. First of all, I love the ambiance of the place. The wood decor for a small booth is a bit stiff, but there's something about the entire feeling of the place that is cool, trendy, and a bit romantic. The first time I wasn't really thrilled with my barbecued shrimp entree, but I attributed it to a different style of preparation than I prefer. My salad was great the second time. My husband loved his entree's both time, wild boar once and a roasted chicken breast the second. The desserts both times were fantastic, the doggie cookie is a great touch to their desserts. Decent wine list and great service both times. Very good food, although not all entree's are a hit. Overall, I really like the place for its ambiance, good service, and pretty darn good food.

Pros: Ambiance, Service

this place has extremely average food. I had the bowtie pasta with andouille and another type of sausage with a creole "sauce" that was just some stewed tomatoes w/ celery, onions and a few other veggies. not a sauce at all and not that good, not bad mind you, just bland. my girlfriend had the veggie special (risotto, w/croquettes) which was also rather bland and the risotto was not at all creamy. not a lot of flavor at the ole white dog

The White Dog has to be the most underrated fan spot. Thres not enough room for a large bar crowd and that may be the reason. The food is first rate and you can eat it at the bar something most Richmond haunts discourage. Attentive service and excellant food make this White Dog "Top Dog" in the Fan.

Pros: food, service, ambience

Cons: beers, seating
