Julian's Restaurant

In my memory this place has been great for

me for over 40 years - I have always adored their shrimp pizza!

  • Pros: good food, friendly, ambience

Born-and-raised Richmonders still get misty-eyed over the mention of a classic pizza.

The Scene
Julian's owners are on premises most days (and nights)--they give the place a comfortable, welcoming feel. Broad Street office workers pour in for the weekday luncheon Blue Plate Specials, nights bring a mixed bag and Sunday fills up with the church crowd. Nostalgia buffs still settle into a cozy booth to share a late-night pizza.

The Food
The signature pizza still draws 'em in after all these years (65 to be exact). It's a classic with a yeasty crust, rich sauce and gooey layer of melted provolone (one size, $10.95 plus extra for toppings). Italian dishes seem to have taken a backseat to some of the daily Southern specials. Tuesdays are Nonna's Homemade Chicken Pot Pie Day, and the country-style rib-eye steak specials (Friday and Saturdays) run close seconds. A basket of hot yeast bread and Italian rum raisin rolls appear the minute you sit down.

It's ok...

by NiniLo at Citysearch

I've had better and I've had worse. It's a nice sized restaurant with friendly staff. The bread is great and the pasta is ok. The downtown location has better food but the WestEnd location has better decor. Only if they could combine the two.

  • Pros: ample parking
  • Cons: so-so food
