Best BBQ in VA

by straylor518

If you are looking for out of this world ribs and BBQ, look no further than "The Pig". Whether you prefer North Carolina style BBQ (vinegar based) or regular BBQ (tomato based) they have the sauce to suit you. Hands down the best homemade desserts anywhere in Richmond. They offer a mouth watering brunch during the winter months every Sunday afternoon. Having been born and raised in Richmond, VA I can honestly say that "The Pig" is the one and only place to experience truly good BBQ.

  • Pros: Quick & friendly service, excellent southern style meals & great affordable prices

Best BBQ in Ashland

by DCR21

The Smokey Pig was a great choice for me and Matt Lauer. Every time he is in town he makes a special trip to dine at The Pig. He has mentioned this casual dining on his show and stopped by a couple of weeks ago while I was there for lunch. So the others can say what they would like I loved every minute of it. My kids had a great time and the food was good home cooked BBQ. Myself as a local of Ashland has not and will never abandon the Pig because as their slogan says "I Dig the Pig".!

  • Pros: Kid Friendly and Great Food

After 25 years, the locals have abandon them, the over quality is on a decline and the prices are up.. They still pull in folks from all over the east coast making they yearly trek up and down I-95.

The PIG was the BBQ Place in the past, but the competion is pretty stiff, so they need to Beef or Pork up their game if they want to hold on for another 25 years

Well, the atmosphere was ok....

by llama_1220

The food was sub par for all of the hype. I had the BBQ, which was dry and bland. If you want incredible food, this is not the restaurant for you. The service was good and it is a good place to take kids. The atmosphere is very casual, much like a evening Waffle House. But the service did little to make up for the disappointment of a below average meal.

  • Pros: service
  • Cons: taste, texture

Small town ambience meets barbecue, Southern style veggies and smiling servers for a Mayberry RFD flashback.

by Contributor

The Scene
A crowded mixture of families, babes in arms, Randolph Macon students and lovers of simple country cooking gather in this small town landmark. Smiling servers juggle platters of barbecue ribs and southern style vegetables and refill your iced tea glass without missing a beat. Once you get past the Hee Haw Pig memorabilia, the atmosphere is quite pleasant.

The Food
You'd almost expect to see Andy and Opie at the next table--and surely there is an Aunt Bee in the kitchen somewhere? Smokers out back provide tasty, spicy beef, pork and chicken barbecue (chopped, sliced or ribs) but don't discount the admirable crab cake dinner. Daily specials include meat loaf, pot roast, beef burgundy and Prime Rib. Desserts are made in-house and the Coconut Cream and Butterscotch pies are lethal. Ask for one slice--two forks.

"The Pig Place"

by pomme_deterre

As a local resident, I visit the Smokey Pig quite often, and therefore can safely attest that their food is quite delectable, despite the apparent dissent of some. Perhaps this is the result of people from different areas having different tastes, just as they speak in different dialects. However, if the food is truly as awful as they seem to think, then why is it such a popular restaurant? While the ambience isn't romantic by any means, keep in mind that it's a barbeque restaurant, after all, and isn't meant to be elite. The Smokey Pig is a wonderful restaurant for the family and, in many ways, epitomizes the subculture of a semi-rural, close-knit community such as Ashland. Oh, and a hint for the barbeque that's so "dry"...put the barbeque sauce on it. That's what it's there for, and it adds some flavor too... ;)

Ugh!

by NiniLo

I dont know if there were more pigs on the BBQ or out in the dining room eating. It must be an aquired taste because we did not enjoy any of the food. The service was nothing spectacular either. It felt like we were in a diner or fast food restaurant, eat & shove you out the door. It was crowded and noisy at the trough.

  • Cons: food, service, atmosphere

Don't Bother

by gunrunner

If it's a BBQ place, then the primary menu item should be....BBQ.

Try the hamburger...much better than the BBQ.

Best HushPuppies around !

by johndavis47

Wonderful hush puppies...... Thats about it . Barbeque is dry and uneventful . The sides are of the canned variety . The masses are fooled . It is standing room only at lunchtime . Then again it's ashland ,Va.

  • Pros: Great Location
  • Cons: arrogant staff, smoking section, barbeque
