The Scene
Heckscher is a leafy shoreline greensward deep in Suffolk County suburbia. This wonderland of park planning fronts the placid and beautiful Great South Bay of Long Island's South Shore, with easy access by car or commuter rail. More than a million visitors a year can't be wrong.
The Details
Twenty miles of trails attract hikers, bicycle and cross-country skiers. Swimmers can use the Great South Bay or the swimming pool complex. There are picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, playing fields, playground and campsites; the campsites can take RVs, trailers or tents. No hookups are available, but potable water is plentiful.
