Must avoid. From the obnoxious inept hostess to the glassy-eyed robotic waiter to the poorly prepared food, this is one of Richmond's must-avoid restaurants. It's a great IDEA for a restaurant -- an old school French brasserie -- but without management and a competent chef, all it is is a collosal waste of time and money. Don't bother with reservations... they might have your table and then again, they might not. Make sure you repeat your order five or six times to your waiter... you still won't get most of it, but you might get some. Plan on spending a leisurely evening... but plan on spending it fuming. What a horrible experience. The overpriced wine list is short on value and variety. The draught beer list would be a better bet if the beer was properly kept. Two of the three beers our party ordered arrived flat and stale. The limited menu is heavy on fish and light on flavor. And for all of this disappointment, you will pay top dollar. Go anywhere else.
Inattentive service, mediocre food, high prices.. Our 7:30 reservation for four wasn't honored, despite the fact that a table for four was available in plain sight. According to the snippy hostess, this table was being held for another party which hadn't arrived yet. She thought we would accept two small round tables shoved together beside the front door. We didn't. When we were eventually seated, the rest of the evening unfolded as might be expected from this beginning. Service was inattentive and sloppy. We had to constantly remind the waiter of items we had ordered which he had forgotten to bring. The food itself was overpriced and very ordinary. The large space that Can Can occupies would be a great place for a restaurant. Someone should open one there.
Poor service and over-priced food. I went to this restaurant with 5 other friends so the gratuity was included in our bill. I say this because I am not sure if this is why we were subjected to such a horrific night. Our waitress was curt, service was slow and the food and drinks were extemely over-priced for the dinner quality. My friends got the roast duck and steak. I got the mussels and crab. The food was tasteless, unexciting and poorly presented; however, what truly made this a horrific experience was what happened with our check. Our waitress split our bill into thirds. This means that she brought 3 checks with each item that was order listed at it's 1/3 total price. Two checks had the same amount but the third check was $25 dollars more than the others. When we asked to have one check, she said that she could not help us and that we would need to find a calculator to figure the check out ourselves. 45 minutes later, our party is still working on this bill...mind you, 2 of my friends are MBA students with finance backgrounds. We asked to see the manager but he would not come talk to our table to address this situation. When asked why if the total was split into third's, why is one check more? We were not answered because she did not know. At this point, we went to find the manager but he would not speak to any of us. As it turns out, we were over charged. We then asked for a pen from our waitress so that we could sign our check. She then threw, yes, threw a pen at us and stated, "You should already have a pen somewhere on that table." I personally went up to the manager on my way out to discuss the night's events. At no given time did he apologize nor did he take accountability for avoiding the situation. He did not have an answer for why he avoided us, but did acknowledge that he was aware that there was a problem with our check. This experience left our pockets empty of cash, our stomaches half full of mediocore food and our night ruined mentally. I really felt taken for a scam when I left.
Should be called "Can't Can't". As a trained chef, I appreciate a restaurant that does not provide salt and pepper to the diners. However, the food should be seasoned. This is not the case at Can Can. From the roasted oysters and mussels for our appetizers to the lamb chops and a cheeseburger with gruyere for dinner, the food was lacking basic seasoning. The lamb chops (3 small chops for $26!!!) were overcooked and served over a bed of undercooked beans. The burger was about the only thing that had even a hint of seasoning, but they definitely skimped on the gruyere. The waitstaff was very unhelpful and not available when needed. (Our waitress took our orders and we did not see her until we were through with our meals.) The white chocolate mousses dessert could only be described as dry; however, the dark chocolate mousse was very good. Both ice creams (caramel and coffee) were also very good. Overall, not worth the money.
