Good Italian and Good Seafood

by live2eat

I went with 2 friends. After you get past the steep climb up what appears to be a back door stairwell and go past the broom and dust pan on the door, you burst into dining room with nice small bar, small tables, and a few longer tables in middle surrounded by brick walls. Call ahead or you’ll sit at the bar for 15 minutes waiting for a table on weekdays and lots more on weekends. The natives are friendly and it is nice to catch up with real people.

We had a wonderful 2004 Barolo which we opened at the bar and enjoyed with the meal. Excellent bread greeted us at the table with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The starter Squid in white wine, garlic, arugula and pine nuts was excellent. The arugula salads had olive oil, pine nuts, and a generous supply of shaved high quality parmesan. My friends had a generous portion of Gray Tile Fish and I had sautéed Soft Shell Crabs in olive oil, pepper, and garlic. The food was well prepared, seasoned, and hot. Mine came with wonderful pasta and marinara sauce. My friends had the garlic and oil which they said was excellent. We finished with tiramisu which was dense and flavorful. They used quality mascarpone cheese and didn’t cut it with whipped cream. The cocoa powder was thick and had a bite.

The waiter service to our table seemed a bit patchy, but not bad. A little more attention would have been nice. The extra help was solid and made up for some mistakes by circling back on the waiter. I kept hoping for pepper grinder over the salt and pepper shakers on the table. In general the kitchen is kicking out some 5+ start food and staff will not dump it in your lap. Considering the prices, the food is bargain. I’d go back in more often if I lived nearby. It is definitely worth the trip even it is just to say “you’d never imagine what a great restaurant I found behind broom and dust pan in Richmond.”

  • Pros: Reasonable prices and excellent food
  • Cons: Little noisy and staff is variable

A Glowing Review From the Pickiest Girl in Richmond

by SuzieQPickyPants

I have been a customer of Edo's for years, and not once has my experience been less than perfect. That statement is a lot especially coming from me. I have the deserved reputation from anyone who has ever dined with me of being the pickiest diner on the planet. I have sent more food back in my lifetime than I have probably eaten. I can't help it, I am a food snob, and there are likely only about a handfull of restaurants in which I have never sent anything back. Edo's in one such establishment. True, no one goes to Edo's for the service, and if you do, you will be dissapointed. That is, until the food arrives at the table. Words can not describe the euphoric experience of a bite of Rockfish, and let me tell you...the porkchops will knock your socks off! Honestly, porkcops are about the last thing I would ever order while out at a restaurant, but one night, by chance, my husband did. He offered me a bite, so I accepted, and to my delight it was heavenly. Juicy and unbelieveably flavorfull! In fact, I don't think I have ever tried a dish there that didn't make my eyes roll back in my head from culinary ecstasy.

A caveat or two: Parties of more than four are pointless as you won't be able to hear everyone, and you will be required to order family style, which dampens teh experience. Do not bring guests with you who can't stand loud, busy, crowded restaurants. Sorry, that's just the way it is. It is popular and small. If you DON"T care for garlic, go to Olive Garden or some other "BS" cheap-o americanized italian place. Do not expect good service or stemware ... you won't miss it anyway. And for god's sake, don't bring lamb sausage guy, he'll ruin my buzz.

Hints: Order off the specials boards on the walls. They are more expensive, but worth every penny, and typically large enough to share. Do make reservations. Try to get seated next to a window. Be kind and chill with the waitstaff and they will reward you with pretty great service.

  • Pros: Flavorfull dishes, cheap options, great wine, consistency
  • Cons: Service, crowded,
