Hidden Gem in Carytown.
About 10 years ago my mother and I stumbled across Mrs. Marshall's and it was so good that we went as much as we could. There is nothing bad on the menu and of course the potato salad is AMAZING! Box Lunch is an absolute must becuase its one steal of a deal. Now that I am grown, on my own and married I came back to Mrs. Marshalls in from California after being away from Richmond for 6 years. It was just as I remembered and even though I had been away the women who owns it, Frances Daniel, still remembered me as if I had been in there yesterday and we got to go down memory lane from when I was younger! :) I can't wait to come back to town to go again and bring my husband this time.

BMWs circle the block for box lunches befitting any Virginia blue blood..
The Scene
This pastel-walled shop sits smack in the middle of Carytown's chic shopping district. Richmond's first families have been ordering sandwiches, cold salads and box lunches for years. With minimal seating (three cafe tables), most everything is ornately (and primarily) boxed for takeout.
The Food
This is traditional genteel Southern grandmother deli food: pimento cheese, cream cheese and olive salad sandwiches, ham biscuits, shrimp and egg salad, a rich tarragon chicken salad. Mrs. Marshall's signature potato salad is made with a homemade mayonnaise recipe dating from the 1920s. Box lunches include a generous sandwich, potato salad, dainty deviled egg and a brownie.

Mrs. Marshall's Does It Right!.
Mrs. Marshall's has the best sandwiches ever, and the size is enormous. More than once I've ordered one and had to take home half for later. Also, the deviled eggs are great - made the "old timey" way. If you haven't had the shrimp salad, you have missed something you should try. And then there's the potato salad - again not to be missed. The service is very good - always friendly and efficient. All in all, a trip to Carytown without a stop at Mrs. Marshall's is an incomplete trip to Carytown. Oh, I forgot to mention the soups - delicious!

Great "comfort" lunch!.
I visit Mrs. Marshall's Carytown Cafe regularly! It's a great place when you just want a good sandwich. I get the Tarragon Chicken Salad lunch (which comes with potato salad) -- I'm sure it has a ton of calories, but that's why it's good. I read the last review that raved about Sallie Belle's -- I've never been a fan. Mrs. Marshall's potato salad is WAY better, and so are the other salads and desserts. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out.
