The Scene – It's a combination of history and contemporary American elegance that has made Shockoe Slip Richmond's premier fine dining strip. What makes Sam Miller's stand out is its varied selection of seafood and its history as one of the first restaurants to jump on the warehouse trend. – – The Food – Seafood restaurants have traditionally done well in the River City, and Sam Miller's is no exception despite the competition from other spots like The Hard Shell. The crab entrees are particularly popular at Sam Miller's and the bar has a festive, happy hour…

Came hungry, left hungry.

by roste at Citysearch

I went to Sam Miller's on a Saturday night date. As such, I didnt complain while I was there. However, I was very disappointed and dissatisfied when we left. The service was good, the hostess was attentive. We noticed that it appeared to be a slow night but the reason we chose this restaurant over the many other restaurants in Shockoe Slip was because of the sign outside advertising Sam Miller's as having an oyster bar. When we sat down and tried to order oysters, we were informed that they were out of oysters. An oyster bar out of oysters on a Saturday night. The crab dip appetizer was fine. I ended up ordering the crab soup and the mozzarella and tomato salad. My date ordered the famous crab cakes. They were fine but the "chef's accompaniments" added up to three small potatoes and a steamed broccoli flower. The soup was a little... smoother than I would have liked. At first I thought they may have used an immersion blender but then I found two or three pieces of crab and realized that my crab soup was light on the crab. The reason I am writing this review though is the salad which is sad because a salad is a difficult thing to make unappetizing. I have made caprese salads at home that were more flavorful than this one. The tomatoes were watery (difficult to spear with a fork) and probably grown in a hot house as tasteless as they were. The tomato slices were a normal size but the cheese slices were about the size of a half dollar coin. The salad itself was obviously premade as the mozzarella had started drying out and gotten a little puckery and the basil that topped it was limp. The balsamic glaze that was latticed onto the plate lived up to its appearance. It belonged on a sickly sweet desert plate. To charge $8 for that salad is robbery. Should have left a half empty seafood restaurant and oyster bar on a Saturday night when they told us they were out of oysters.

  • Pros: good service, nice decor
  • Cons: small portions, ingredients that arent fresh, overpriced

Best crab cakes in Virginia!

by YaYa22 at Citysearch

Chef Pryor did an outstanding job all the way around but I have to say the crab cakes were seriously delicious! No one can come close to Chef Pryor's crab cakes. There are the BEST in Virginia. There is no doubt in my mind that I will go back and share with friends and family!

The only complaint I have is when we arrived no one greeted us right away. There seemed to be some confusion on where the host was. We didn't have to wait to be seated very long though.

  • Pros: Outstanding crab cakes! Personable Chef

Big dissapointment

by lark1111 at Citysearch

My family and I were visiting last week. We decided on dining at this rest. because of the menus posted on the outside of the rest. Once we were sat at our table, we were haughtily told that there were two menus and we could be moved to the bar area if we wanted both. We were made to feel unwelcome because of our interest in their salads on the other menu. Having worked in the hospitality business for years, I was shocked at the lack of friendliness, and professionalism. The food was dissapointing. The vegetables were overcooked and the rest was oversalted. The prices only guarantee that you will be treated in a snobby and shabby fashion. If only we had ventured down the street.

  • Pros: great location, nice decor
  • Cons: low quality food, low quality attitude

Waiting for the Flavor

by pathop at Citysearch

Me, my son and husband visited this restaurant last weekend while in Richmond. Overall our experience was pretty good. They have a nice menu selection and a decent atmosphere. I'd like to say that the food was good but I can't. This is a pricey restaurant and it would be hard for me to recommend to it someone. What you pay doesn't match what you expect your taste buds to experience.

  • Pros: good menu selection
  • Cons: , pricey
