Overview
Take a stroll down the Canal Walk and you'll be amazed that something this lovely could be a part of downtown Richmond. With its benches, bridges and painted murals, the Walk is a refuge from the chaos of downtown--and the water has an amazing calming effect on frazzled nerves. The Canal Walk stretches from Tredegar Street to the Turning Basin to Tobacco Row. Since it links Brown's Island to the Slip, you can walk the entire distance.
Features
One of the best features of the Canal Walk is the 30-minute guided boat tours of the canal. If you're a history buff (or just need a break from the heat), visit the exhibits displayed under the bridge near the Turning Basin.
A work in progress. The Canal Walk is the best 'work in progress' Richmond has seen in YEARS. Anyone expecting overnight success from this redevelopment is expecting failure. Instead, the businesses (especially retailers and restaurants) surrounding the canal are FULLY invested in and committed to its success. Tourists are increasing weekly, and there is more and more to do each month. New construction may cause temporary headaches, but it will truly be 'the spot' to be. (The one major need: pushing local government to fund public facilities! Help!)
Greatest Date Spot in Richmond. Canal Walk is a wonderful place to take a date. It is quiet, intimate, not to mention beautiful. The proximity to Shockoe bottom and other sites around Richmond make it easy to grab a bite at Sine or Bottom's Up after a long walk along the canal. It really is a perfect spot for a date.
Cool Walk. Beautiful walk through the canals of Richmond. It even has a boat ride to enable you to learn the history.
