Editorial Review for Carytown – by Kristine Forrest

Destination Shopping
With over 10 blocks of specialty stores, funky restaurants and unique galleries, Carytown is a far cry from strip mall shopping. Consider it a Busch Gardens for bargain-hunters: there's a whole world of unusual shops to discover and it could easily take a whole day to do it. Seek out kitschy gifts at Mongrel, World of Mirth or Lane Sanson; find frocks at Pink, Narcissus or Phoenix and pick up a book at Carytown Books or Narnia.

Fuel Up
Carytown restaurant owners know how to capitalize on location--diners get great food and even better people-watching vantage points at Acacia and Nacho Mama's. Need something quick? Try picking up a sandwich at The Baker's Crust, or grabbing a burger at the retro Galaxy Diner.

Carytown is a great place to bring out-of-town guests. You'll find lots of great gift ideas in the many shops, boutiques and antiques stores. Be sure to check out World of Myrth, one of the coolest toy stores I've ever seen. Mongrel is also packed with fun stuff. There are plenty of places for the hungry shopper to grab a bite to eat. I recommend Nacho Mama's for great Mexican food and excellent margaritas. Parking is scarce, so be prepared to search around for an open spot and make sure you can parallel park! It's also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes. Oh - and be sure to get out of here before nightfall. Most of the stores close anyway, and the area isn't safe when the sun goes down.

Pros: Lots of charming shops

Cons: Limited Parking, Scary after dark
