Editorial Review for Byrd Park – by Doug Budryk
The Scene
Rolling its way between residential neighborhoods and the James River, Byrd Park features lush lawns framed with trees, three man-made lakes, monuments, tennis courts and athletic fields. Summer concerts are held in the outdoor amphitheater. The lakes are stocked with fish, and ducks and geese wander among the visitors and happily accept your gifts of food. The "fountain lake" rents paddleboats for family fun. Fourth of July fireworks here are a Richmond tradition. Cruising has been outlawed at Byrd Park, so there are no longer cars creeping by with overly loud music.
Different Seasons
In summer, Arts in the Park, displaying works by Virginia artists and craftsmen, attracts over 100,000 visitors in just two days. In winter, the Christmas pageant on the Carillon steps will warm your heart.

City dwellers looking for a relaxing picnic destination or just a place to throw the frisbee can find it at Byrd Park. Lots of open space, green grass and man-made ponds. Don't bring any bread crumbs for the geese - you're not supposed to feed them. The annual 4th of July fireworks show at the Carillon is great. You can bring a blanket and relax on the lawn while the symphony plays before the show begins. You'll feel like you're right underneath the exploding fireworks - it's quite a rush. The event is free, but be prepared to fight the crowds for a good spot. One more note: the park is close to a couple of shady neighborhoods, so don't visit at night.
