Expansive fairways mean most will golf better than they have in the past..
The Scene
This Dan Maples-designed golf course is a true community course. Nestled in a neighborhood, this Bermuda and bent-grass course is forgiving of golfers who spray the ball around, and the fairways are open with ball loss kept to a minimum. Signature hole: Number 4, par-3; a half island hole with the green over water; and No. 18 par-5; not another hole like it in the state of Virginia. Need three solid shots to the green. It's an excellent course for the average player. Not too long but back tees can be troublesome. This 10-year old course is fairly easy for some players because of the smaller greens. Birkdale is a good choice for golfers intimidated by narrow fairways and wooded approaches, as its course rating of 68.8 would attest.
The Main Course
The course is described as short and tight. It is a long-hitter's course. Both public and private tournaments are held here.
average. Birdale is a course where golfers of average or below average skills can enjoy. Low handicappers will find it easy.
Poor Service. I had a mini golf tourney the day of my wedding on this course. To bring almost 30 people out and spend quite a bit of money, I was very surprised at the poor service. I was not expecting anything extra, just courtesy. The staff was very rude, especially the ranger. Not a bad course, but it is certainly not worth the drive to get there or the hassle of dealing with the staff.
