Thank goodness they are now non-smoking. Well worth a trip.. Fod was pretty good. I had eaten here once before when it was smoking and the haze pretty much ruined dinner for me. Don't even remember the food from that visit.

This time, however, things were different. The steamed shrimp were very good. While I thought the crab and red pepper flavors clashed a little in the soup, my wife really enjoyed it. Her scallops were well-cooked and tasted great, as did the spinach risotto with lobster-infused cream sauce. My steak was cooked a perfect medium rare. Only down side of the meal was the upcharge to add "Oscar" to my steak was not inline with what it was. I expected Oscar--lump crab in a cream sauce. Turns out I just got a small dish of crab and asparagus. It frankly wasn't worth the $6.99 listed on the menu. Since I was only charged $4.99 maybe I didn't order what I thought I ordered. Disappointment was probably more from improper expecations on my part.

The waiter was very patient with us and provided excellent service. Our daughter has a milk and dairy allergy, so wife and I asked lots of questions about the ingredients. Those he didn't know he happily went to find out. I mentioned that I was going to share my steak with my daughter, so he went the extra step of having the asparagus cooked without butter as well as warning me that the mashed potatoes had dairy in them.

I'll definitely go back. Probably on Monday or Wednesday to take advantage of the half of steam shrimp special those nights. That should make for a very satisfying (albeit messy) dinner.

Great seafood with wonderful service. We are frequent visitors to the restaurant?s half-price burger night on Tuesday?s, so we expected to have a good meal when we planned to have my mother ?in-law?s ninetieth birthday party at Shacklefords. The whole party was more than astonished by the superb meals served . Each meal was attractively presented, served hot and delicious. The waitress was efficient and very friendly. The whole experience was fantastic. Thanks Tripp and staff for making this a very memorable occasion for our guests.

Long for the simple life on the Chesapeake Bay.. The Scene
Besides the spectacular waterfront views and scenic vistas, the seafood is what draws many back to the shores of Virginia's famed waterway. Shackleford's, which also has a Williamsburg location, makes its Richmond home in the booming Glen Allen area, a section densely populated with families. Shackleford's serves its neighbors well--the kid's menu offers such favorites as PB&Js and corn dogs at junior-sized prices. The outdoor deck, though small, offers seating for those lucky enough to get there early on a nice evening.

The Food
Many of the entrees at Shackleford's have a sophisticated twist that you may not expect at your neighborhood bar and grill. On a recent Sunday, I indulged in an item off of their chic brunch menu: German crepes. The thin, crepe-like pancakes were rolled with caramelized apples and finished with a sweet balsamic mint syrup and came with a side of scrambled eggs and hash browns for $7.95.

As one might expect from a restaurant inspired by the Bay, seafood is a major attraction at Shackleford's. The crab and shrimp burrito--a tomato-tortilla wrap with a mixture of crab, shrimp, rice and cheeses, baked and served over black beans and rice and topped with salsa for $11.95 is a favorite. I was disappointed, however, at the crab cake sandwich, seared on the grill and served with an herb remoulade; it was a bit salty, and the remoulade was slightly bland.

Neighborhood Retreat. Shackleford's provides a wonderful retreat for Far West Enders. The combination of an outstanding menu, great quality food and excellent service makes this a real find. And the prices are right, especially for the excellent cuisine! On our most recent visit we had an outstanding meal on the pleasant outdoor deck. At a nearby table, our waitress worked patiently with a customer to help her select a glass of wine that suited her mood. The specials she recommended were delicious and the White Chocolate Bailey's Creme Brulee was out of this world. A varied wine list by the glass and a comfortable, unpretentious interior make Shackleford's a great night out. Enjoy!
