Great food, super-friendly staff and biker-friendly. I went to Sportsman's on a first date in Dec. 2008 and like the other reveiwer said, from the outside this place didn't look like somewhere I wanted to go. But my date insisted it was a great place and he was right. It's large inside, with areas for darts, video games, live music [when scheduled], a bar, and plenty of tables & chairs. The staff couldn't have been friendlier and made us feel at home. The food portions are huge so go there when you're really hungry! Sportsman's is a biker-friendly establishment so if you're a biker looking for somewhere you won't be treated like a freak of nature, Sportsman's is your place.
Ignore the scenery, check out this eatery - good food cheap and quick!.
Granted, from the outside it doesn't look too promising... a huge parking lot in need of repair and a fade-painted flea market at the end of the lot.
But step inside and... what would I describe it as - a big ole honkey tonk that has been expanded to huge proportions. Do you like pool, darts, or "video crank"? Well, they have that in abundance. The night I went was a Saturday and though the weather kept a lot of people at home (it was cold, raining, and miserable), they had a live band (The Kind Eye Band Project) that was very entertaining.
What surprised me most was the food. If you just want some good ole home cooked food, this is definitely a place to check out. I ordered the fried pork chop plate and, expecting a small portion, also ordered a basket of fries to share with the wife. The waitress/bartender was very friendly and warned me that they weren't "up to snuff" with their usual samplings as far as size, and I'm a pretty big eater...
Well, I don't know how big the chops usually are, but these were the biggest I've seen in years. And they weren't just big, they were just like I like 'em. A touch of crisp on the edges but still juicy on the inside. I''m not exaggerating when I say these were 2 of the best tasting pork chops I've had in some time...
Actually, I AM exaggerating - with the large portions of green beans (nice) and home-made mac and cheese (excellent, though just a touch 'old' - it was latish in the evening so somewhat expected - but still tasty) - in any event, I couldn't finish the chops.
So don't get completely scared off by the scenery - if you want some diner americana food done up right, this is one place to seriously consider.
If you've enjoyed the American Diner back when it was decent, and not on the downslide it has been on the past few years, I can attest that the Sportsman is better in that good food cheap and quick department.
