Seeing Tower Records' cross-section of customers is worth a visit in its own right.. The Scene Tower Records, the subject of the movie "Empire Records," has given big national stores a good name. Many equate "national chain" with "lousy service," but Tower proves to be the exception. Helpful staff sporting laminate name tags (to help you discern them from the blue-haired guy checking the pop section) guide you to the music of your choice. Who's buying? More of a cross-section of Richmond than, say Plan 9--you're likely to see registered Republicans browsing the classical section while the tat-set looks through the racks for the new System of a Down CD. Due to its Willow Lawn location, Tower gets traffic from the city and the counties.
On Sale Tower has one of the best "Nice Price" sale racks. Mostly older mainstream Columbia recordings like Bob Dylan, Boston and Earth Wind and Fire. Other labels sell their backlog at Tower with a pretty good selection.
