Excellent food as always.... but appalling treatment..
Excellent food is ALWAYS a draw to me, and Azurro?s has always had some of the finest meals. But nothing can trump the service you receive as a patron. Over the years I have joined friends here for countless dinners and have brought clients in from out of town. But after my last experience, I will NEVER return. And if you value service over food, I'd advise the same.
Case in point: Handling a personal situation, I took a cell phone call on the patio. As my conversation grew heated, and employees wandered in and out the patio door, I proceeded to my car to finish in privacy then return. Before I even sat in the car (mind you, the parking lot is VERY small), I was accosted by the General Manager accusing me of walking out of my tab, ordering me off the phone and returning immediately to the restaurant to clear my tab! I informed him I had to handle my personal matter and would return momentarily and was harshly told "no", to ?get off of the phone? and return ?now?. To say the least I was appalled and mortified. I have always considered this an upstanding and classy establishment.
Yes, the food is excellent, but that kind of treatment- especially from a General Manager, is unacceptable and uncalled for. They have lost a long time patron and many of my friends and professional colleagues as well. Service should always come first. A bad day should be left at home (if that was a case) and a customer always treated with courtesy and respect, regardless of past encounters with other customers.
Great Food and Service.
After reading some reviews about this place I made reservations for my wife and I (it is a must, on a Tues people were being turned away). The food was really good, my wife ordered a brick oven pizza (Pizza di Medditerraneo) and I ordered the Vitello tre Scalini (Veal) both dishes were really good. Because the veal dish came with vegetables and the pizza also had a variety as well both dishes had a different taste with each bite. We also shared a Terimisu dessert. The service throughout the meal was excellent the waitress was very patient and attentive!
The downside to this place is that it is very noisy!! Not slightly or a slight roar we were seated for two by the bar and could not hear each other talk unless we talked louder than normal as if we were in seperate rooms at home. When we first arrived the bar had about 6 people at it when it was time for us to leave it was full and there were about 15 people standing as well, they were about 3 feet from our table and we had to sneak by them to leave. We could hear other conversations in the back of the resteraunt throughout our mean so it would not have been any less quiet. The floors are tiled which makes the place noisy. We will go back for maybe a lunch but diner...never again.
Best in Richmond!. There is nothing bad to say about Azzurro. It is a wonderfully, cozy place and the food and service are both extraordinary. Be sure to order one of their brick oven pizzas. They make a great appetizer to share.
REAL Italian Food in Richmond!. Having traveled to many a city in Italy, I can certainly say that Azzurro offers the reality of experience in ambiance and flavor of any authentic Italian restaurant anywher in the world. Azzurro is a "must go" for anyone who knows real Italian food.
A Great Italian Restaurant. Azurro could well be the best Italian restaurant in Richmond. All of their selections are heavenly, and the cheesecake is the best I've tasted. I failed to get a reservation, which is needed, but they made room for us anyway. The place is kind of loud, so it's not where to go for a quiet evening. I also felt underdressed in my jeans. I'll dress better the next time I go. It can be pricey, but you get what you pay for. The food, service, and ambiance make it worth it.
With a name that describes the color of an Italian sky, it's no surprise this restaurant is rich in ambience..
The Scene
A wood stove infuses the food at Azzuro with a unique smoked flavor, a robustness that seems as much a part of the meal as the accompanying bread. A truly marvelous interior is tempered by horrible acoustics. The noise level is just below a roar. But the service is impeccable and the food stands on its own merit. The romance factor is pretty high because of the ultra-smooth dining room, delicious Italian food and wines and service. Despite the noise, it should impress.
The Food
The menu at Azzuro is a geographical trip through Italy drawing from the top to the bottom of the boot-shaped country's unique cities and their signature cuisines. Pastas cooked al dente and gorgeous risottos highlight this road map of Italian fare. With the right vintage to complement the harmony of an elegant dining area and savory meal, the effect is not soon forgotten.
