Great service!. I just dined at Skilligalee for the first time the other night. It was my birthday and I definetly wanted it to be special. Our food came quickly, tasted great and our server even brought me a complimentary birthday dessert! I will be back again and with more friends in tow next time!
The best place for seafood and a cozy place to dine.. We have visited Skilligalee many times over the years and we love the food, and the service, and the ambiance. As someone who enjoys wine, I love their variety and reasonable prices. Recently, I took my mother for her birthday and when the staff heard me casually mention it, they all made a point of coming over and wishing her a happy birthday. She liked that personnel touch and made me promise to bring her back. i have also taken my business associates there for lunch and have been able to conduct our meetings with a quiet atmosphere. Skilligalee is a beautiful restaurant inside with good food and service, they just need to light it up outside!
great place for a good time. Skilligalee is one of my favorite places to go. No matter if my husband and I go alone or if we bring our kids we are welcomed in the same manner. Skilligalee has the best seafood platter around, more than I could eat in one sitting. They have romantic lighting and comfy booths that make you feel like you are in private dining. The staff is very knowledgable and helps to make your dining experience wonderful!!
Always a good meal. My Husband and I visit Skilligalee frequently and we always have an excellent meal. My favorite dishes are the stuffed shrimp and the crab cakes. They also have a selection of wonderful nightly specials that we often try. One special that I always order if it is offered is the blackened salmon with a fresh tomato cucumber relish. This is the perfect summer time dish. My family and I love the food and the staff, some of who we have gotten to know very well. They always take excellent care of us treating us more like family than customers. This is a great place to dine!
Worst Experience Ever!! Expensive Lesson!!.
As the old saying goes: "you get what you pay for" is not the case at this restaurant.
We visited Richmond for the July 4th holiday. Upon arriving in Richmond we decided we were in the mood for seafood. We found Skilligalee's.
After being seated our waitress brought us the menu. The prices we're comparrable to other 4-5 star restaurant's we frequent, avererage $25-30+ per person.
After placing our order our food arrives fairly quickly. We realized why after it arrived. I could not believe what was put in front of me, (my families entire order was around $100). We could have bought and cooked everything we were served for around $12.00-15.00.
The chips/fries we're frozen (they tasted like cheap frozen store brand fries). The seafood had a funny after taste. I honestly think we could have gotten better seafood at Golden Corral or Popeyes.
Unless you want to throw $100+ out the window (this is our normal bill everywhere we go) I highly suggest you look elsewhere for seafood. We had to learn this lesson the hard way. Very disappointed....
Don't go if you're hungry!.
My family just returned from Richmond. We decided to eat at Skilligalee because we are from NC, and LOVE good seafood.
Skilligalee has to be most pretentious restaurant I have ever seen!
We went around 6pm. There were maybe 15 people total in the restaurant, which has seating capacity for at the very least 250 people. The teenage hostess asked us if we "have reservations"? We asked if we need them and she said "no, I was just asking".
After we were seated, a tatooed waitress came for our drink order. My husband and I are not big drinkers, so we all ordered sweet tea. The waitress said "we don't have sweet tea, but we have lots of sugar". I know that sweet tea is a southern thing, but the last time I checked my history book, VA was a member of the confederacy.
After our drinks arrived we place our orders. I ordered the combination platter with fried and stuffed shrimp, and a crab cake for $24.95. The entree also came with the standard choices of potato and salad or slaw. I chose baked and salad. My husband ordered the seafood platter with slaw and potato wedges $29.95. Our oldest daughter ordered shrimp scampi around $25.
When our orders arrived we were SHOCKED! These were the smallest portions that I have ever seen. First the side salad was served with ONE grape tomato sliced in half. IT's JULY! Can they not afford more than one grape tomato during tomato season???!!!! I had 1 stuffed medium size shrimp, 2 medium size fried shrimp, and 1 two inch diameter crab cake. The potato was also child size. The scampi that our daughter ordered was 4 medium shrimp in butter, period! Husband got a TOTAL of 10 small pieces of seafood.
The seafood was not bad, but I have definitely had better. The crab cake tasted a bit undercooked. The potato wedges weren't even hand cut, they were fast food style frozen wedges-grainy and unappetizing.
I can honestly say that the only thing I found the least bit redemptive about this place was the bread basket. The rolls were fresh and delicious, and they use real butter. However wonderful the bread, it doesn't warrant the $100 bill.
My advice for anyone considering this place would be to order a dozen rolls to go, and find another restaurant for your seafood.
Highly recommend. Excellent choice for seafood.. Excellent choice for seafood. Eat downstairs for a more casual private pub like atmosphere or if you have little kids! The food is always excellent and we love it. Highly recommend.
Really good seafood food. Best in Richmond. We love eating here. The food is always fresh and the staff is wonderful. Try the Jumbo stuffed shrimp.
Not very good at all!. We have eaten at Skilligallee's several times and it just not very good. I got an early bird special, which was the lobster tail on one ocassion. The lobster tail was tiny - I mean maybe 2 bites (If I had taken a bite of it). I tried to return it, but the restaurant would not exchange it because I had removed it from the shell. This makes me think they re-serve food. Service is always lousy. Seafood at Red Lobster is better than this place. I will not return.
Just not good!. The 'West End Best' magazine featured an article a few months ago about the best crab cakes in Richmond and there was this amazing picture of a Skilligalees crab cake made with large chunks of crab meat and light on the filler. What a disappointment! It was one of the worst I have ever eaten and I swear there was almost no crab meat in it at all. The restaurant itself is in desperate need of a renovation and the average age of the clientele was geriatric. Not the nicest review but it was truly a disappointing experience if not bordering on creepy.
