AND OUT OF BUSINESS – I can't say I'm too sorry either. I agree the burgers are nothing like they were. Not even worth waiting for except for the memories. I miss the old crinkle cut fries with the little paper cup of ketchup. They say when the last owner had the business, he bought the best meat he could find. Too bad the new folks were trying to cut the cost. I say charge a little more and buy better meat. Too late for that now I guess.
Gone Down Hill – I lived in the Lakeside area as a child - Roy was still alive and used to walk around giving lollipops to the kids. The building is the same, the parking lot - same - the few concret picnic tables - same. For those of us who went there as a child you kinda get used to it and it is more nostalgia then the actual food. The place has gone down hill. The burgers used to be tasty - greasy - just plain good! That was back in the day when that skinny man with barely there shoe polish black hair was the cook.
Today - the taste of the meat is non existent and dry. The toppings are fresh and it is still a joy, as an adult, to watch them put the burgers together. The fries are so so - but their ICE rocks - that old fashioned small ice that will not break off a tooth when you crunch on it!
Try it just to say been there done that, but dont expect much. There are way to many other places these days where you can get an awesome burger.
Great Burger - Set your expectations first! – I enjoy a chain burger with the best of them, but Roy's is a good old fashioned burger joint that come with no expectations of anything but a burger...by that I mean, don't look for anyone waiting on you, don't look for a in dining experience, don't look for order and out...it's all a process. You would think this guy studied under GE's finest Six Sigma Black Belts...process driven; orders are taken, burgers are made and burgers are delivered...sure, there is a lean method to this, but for god's sake, it's a former drive in that's lasted throughout the past two decades....If you don't like a little bit of character, go back to Micky D's....otherwise, order a double, get some fries and park in on a bench in back....more importantly - on a sunny day.
Local Does Not Mean Better – What we have here is a local place where people stand in line for what is a tastless burger. Frying on a griddle until most of the moisture is gone..does not make a good hamburger. Most of the chain hamburger joints leave this local spot in the dust..in the taste department. I have given this place several tries and am not impressed. First there is always a line...the food served does not deserve one. The wait for your food is not to long though. Once you get your meal..there is no place to eat on a bad weather day..except in your car. The hamburger has little flavor except for the onions and other condiments. The generous portion of beef on the large bun is basically tasteless. You would do almost as well by leaving off the meat and eating just the bun and condiments. Fries were good and hot and had decent flavor..but not outstanding.
Sorry people..but local does not make it better.
Old-school burgers keep lines long at Roy's Big Burger. – The Scene
Roy's Big Burger plows right through the lines that form at its window. At lunch, lines are 20 or 30 people deep, but they move quickly. A few picnic tables offer seating outside, but people usually place an order and eat in their cars. How many places can serve burgers, have no dining room and still pack 'em in at lunchtime? The crowd: Construction workers on a lunch break from the site, neighborhood families and lots of guys sitting alone in their cars stuffing their faces.
Delicious burgers are served quickly. Big flat patties and fresh toppings keep this neighborhood hot spot busy, despite average fries.
If you like burgers – If you like a great original burger and you are in the neighborhood, a stop at Roy's is a must. I will occasionally go out of my way for lunch just to get a Roy's double cheesburger.
just want to say that Roys is still the best burger around! Once you eat one you will be hooked for life so please....make the decision to do so carefully!
Good Burgers, Lousy Ketchup – Great burgers, good fries. A richmond original!! Good service. The ambience is one that is becoming rarer in th US. BUT i give only a 7 because the ketchup they use is just horrible. I refuse to put it on my fries and it really takes away from the burger. My advice to Roy, get some Heinz for crying out loud -- even Hunts will do ---.
Btw, crushed ice rules!!!!!
terrific – great place for a great burger with fresh veggies...butger lovers get the double!
The best Richmond Tradition – I have been going to Roy's for over 20 years! They are the best burger place in town!
