Editorial Review for Grapeleaf – by Carter Trumbo
The Scene
Nothing here will knock you out. Unobtrusive décor, simple white tablecloths, friendly, attentive staff and authentic Lebanese food provide a welcome relief from Americanized subs and steaks. University of Richmond staff and students now have a new neighborhood niche.
The Food
The lunch menu is small but authentic. Daily made-from-scratch tabbouleh is a perfect salad starter and the babaghanouge sandwich (roasted eggplant puree on a pita, $4.45) provides an interesting contrast. Dinner offerings include a nice mix of marinated beef, chicken and Mediterranean specialties. All entrees are served with colorful sides of creamy hummus, tabbouleh, saffron rice and a basket of warm pita triangles. Vegetarians can indulge in a wide choice of appetizers and three main entrees (falafel, chef's eggplant, $9.45) and fatayer (Lebanese pies, $6.95).

I visited this place with my husband, having heard positive things about the resturant from co workers. The hostess seated the couple ahead of my husband and I then refused to seat us- stating it was "too late", then stating that the "air conditioner was broken." They seated another family while we were standing there! The manager came out and suggested we vsit another resturant "up the street." I have NEVER been so humiliated in my entire life. This is 2008 and we are supposed to be moving forward- not back to the Jim Crowe era. Then owner was even worse- stating "I'm not even from this country- how can I discriminate?" Refusing to seat customers from one ethnic group while seating tose from another is discriminatory!
Pros: none
Cons: Refused to seat an ethnic minority couple while at the same time seated others
