I agree - Overhyped!. First, their address has changed, so please update your site. They are now in the Stoney Point Shopping Center. Went there last night w/ a friend and we were both dissapointed on several items. First, the server was friendly, but did not have enough time to take care of us and took forever to get to us. The BBQ was good, but the baked beans were heated straight from the can. They were supposed to be BBQd beans, but I didn't detect even a hint of BBQ sauce and they had never seen an oven (which is what I expect when it says 'baked' beans). The apple sauce was the same, straight from the can. The hush puppies were fantastic and the BBQ was very good. I had the bread pudding for dessert and it was so good I wished that was all I had ordered! They had a sign as you entered to be patient while they learn their new surroundings, so I hope it gets better that what we experienced last night.
Okay Food - HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!. My mother, husband and two children went to Benny's last night for my mother's birthday. We waited for everything FOREVER! They have 2 servers in the entire place and while the place isn't that big, they struggled the entire time we were there. The food was okay, the type of barbeque sandwich you can get anywhere, probably not any better than Famous Dave's. I had a restaurantcom certficate that I BOUGHT about a year ago and they refused to take it. They stated that "They don't work right with us." Well, I would never had bought $50 worth of food at Benny's without this certficate, at this point it was too late. They coudn't care less about my trouble with this matter. No apology, nothing, just a "we don't take that no more" attitude! UGH! They even charge me $1.50 for each of my kids kiddie cups which is the price of a regular soft drink! I will never, never go here again. The food is nowhere near good enough to compensate for the horrible take it or leave it attitude. They plan on moving to Stony Point soon and they will most certainly have to step up their game if they want to last!
Way too overhyped.
They call this roast beef where I come from. Not even a hint that it was a beef BBQ sandwich. However, it was a good roast beef sandwich.
Building exterior leaves much to desire. Not worth the drive if you live north of the James River. Onion Rings were too soggy - might have been OK if they had been recently fried.
Average. Unfortunately, the local nostalgic hype carries this bbq farther then it should. Sure it's good, but many other places are doing it better. The "famous" Onion Rings were frankly sub-par. Service was friendly but slow for a non-busy night.
Best BBQ in the City of Richmond!!!.
I've been all over the world and tried BBQ from everywhere. The only BBQ that comes even close to Benny's is Ralph's BBQ in NC. My wife and I went because we live close, but have never been. Shame on us! We didn't know what we were missing. The atmosphere was cozy but small. We ate at the bar. I ordered the Chopped Pork BBQ sandwich w/coleslaw and Hotsauce, side of Redskin Potato Salad and Baked Beans. I was shocked how the sandwich was so Delicious! It melts in your mouth. We're big BBQ fans and we've been looking for the best BBQ in the City of Richmond. Here it Is! It didn't taste so thick as pork can. It had a light taste, but still filling. The potato salad was seasoned right and the BBQ Baked beans were sweet and spicy. I highly enjoyed my experience. My wife had the short stack of ribs which were, as she stated were "Cooked to Perfection"! We found our new BBQ spot!!! Service was great. We went in during the lunch hour, and our food was done and hot, within 7 minutes of ordering. If this place was a secret, it isn't Now!
5 stars for Best BBQ in the City of Richmond. Congrats!
Best BBQ I've had.... This is my first review and I joined just so I could comment on this BBQ. It's really terrific...I ate half of it before I even realized there was no sauce on it! You should try it if you haven't already - you won't regret it. The only thing lacking was sweet tea...making your own at the table just isn't the same!
