Only Locals Wanted. While live music is still a draw for a supposed Richmond landmark bar, the level of professionalism among staffers is extremely low. Locals, other restaurants' wait staff and anybody who is recognized are not charged a cover when live bands play. They fully admit to this, and do not make any apologies for letting 3/4 of the crowd in for free. Poe's is not a serious live music establishment in the Richmond music biz anymore - they are just as happy having they stereo play oldies. They don't help promote shows (outdated website), and then give quite a bit of attitude when you question a $100 paycheck with a full restaurant at the end of the evening. Richmond bands take note - they treat you like they are doing you a huge favor....…
Horrible Service. I guess I should not have expected much but the service by out waitress was atrocious. She came to our table maybe once every 30 minutes. Our glasses and beers remained empty for what seemed like ages. It was especially annoying since there were perhaps 20 people in the entire place and 2 waitstaff. The food was decent but nothing special. Live music is a plus. I'd skip it and hit Sidewalk unless you live in the Bottom.…
As quirky, unique and darkly appealing as its literary namesake, this bar is music to your beers..
The Scene
Wood paneled walls. Loud crowds. Smoke, tunes, attitude. Poe's Pub avoids the yuppie hype of downtown Richmond and creates its own reason to visit Church Hill--but don't let the
casually hip scene be the only reason you go.
The Draw
This Irish pub remains one of the best places to hear live music in the city, and it boasts a full music calendar to prove it. The music: Small bands, acoustic artists and the occasional flashy show regularly rock a corner of the bar. This ain't your typical Friday Cheers band-fest, but then again, this ain't your typical Friday Cheers crowd. Poe's menu ain't poetry for the tongue with typical items like sandwiches and burgers--but the ribs and catfish dishes can intrigue diners with something different. A late night menu proves that good eatin' doesn't end after 10pm.…
good times. good times ... cold beer ... hot wings ... tasty chow ... good service
home town. Really enjoyed the times that I have spent at Poe's. Listening to the music and enjoying the good food.
