Good food, good people. I go into the Hill Cafe a few times a week and I must say I love their food. Maybe once or twice I was bummed because their fries were a little over-cooked, but I wouldn't say I have been let down. Then again, I am no chef, but I really do love their food. It's a great place for lunch or dinner. If you want to head over on a Saturday at noon and grab their Hill Burger with caramelized onions and cheddar or perhaps a spicy cajun chicken wrap, it's a great place for a nice lunch. Not to mention, their fries are delicious- they are little shoestring fries and I can't get enough of them! As for dinner, they have their blueplate specials, (2 dollars off until 6 pm) which include their infamous meatloaf, fried chicken, pork chop, southern fried fish and roast turkey, with your choice of two sides. The also have some great entrees and they always have a nightly special and a special to choose from on their special board. How could you not love this place with all the choices? Plus, the atmosphere is always fun- you get a mix of the regulars that live around the churchhill area as well as newcomers and the some college students from the fan. It's a nice variety, with nice people, good music and great food. You gotta come check out the Hill Cafe in the historic district of Church Hill!

Often forgotten or overlooked. I've been to this place twice in the last 6 months. I am confused about the other reviews. I like the atmosphere of this bar/restaurant. It is a nice distraction from eating in the Fan. The food has been quite tastey both times. The Calamari is bad though over spiced and overbreaded. Too spicey unless you order a different dipping sauce. However, our main courses were excellent again and we washed them down with a couple of bottles of wine. Try the crabcakes or a special. I highly recommend it for a one of your first couple of dates.

Classic American blue plate specials make every meal worth the climb.. The Scene
New owners renovated this neighborhood café but left slices of charm intact. Colorful brick walls, dark wooden booths and nightly chalkboard blue plate specials welcome a full house of casual neighborhood regulars. Bottom and business district professionals make the climb to do deals over lunch or dinner and Sunday brunch brings a laid-back spread out the papers crowd. Service is personal enough for them to eventually know your name.

The Food
The menu is well-rounded enough to suit all tastes, but what really packs 'em in are the nightly blue plate specials (available starting at 5pm). Simple classics like barbecue chicken, meatloaf, prime rib, spaghetti, and barbecue ribs each have their own "day" and portions are plentiful with homemade sides. Sunday brunch lends a more regional flavor with standouts like chipped beef gravy over buttermilk biscuits, huevos rancheros and tomato, basil and mozzarella strata.

An old Mainstay. It's very popular and will stay that way. My service was great, the place looks great but the food was hit or miss. The clamari was tremendously overseasoned to the point that it could have been a Funyun I was eating. My potatoes were cold but the fillet mignon was perfect (rare and tender). The tuna steak was uninspired and boring.

It was a busy Saturday night so I guess I'll be forgiving - but still, for the money ....

Oh, the entire staff was very friendly and attentive.

Won't Be Back!. Our waitress tossed menus at us and nastily stated that only the back of the menu was available. We thought we saw some quesadillas go by (not on the back), so we checked to be sure: "just the back!" she snapped. After taking our order with equally as much attitude, we didn't see much of her, had to practially flag her down for refills. Our food took almost an hour. Three ordered burgers, but weren't asked how they'd like them to be cooked; they arrived ranging from medium-rare to medium. We couldn't have asked for them to be cooked further- the waitress never came back until it was time for the bill. (We also couldn't ask for the pasta salad that never showed up.) The food was good, but I'll never go back. As a former waitress, I'm forgiving, but this was an all time low of bad service.

We Love the Hill!. We visit the Hill Cafe at least once a week for either a small snack or a full meal, and each time we've been the food has been wonderful (simple yet flavorful and consistant) and the service good. The creme brulee size leaves a bit to be desired (way to small for the price) The atmosphere is pleasant with a high comfort level.
