Editorial Review for Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – by Patrick Rooney and Judi Goldenberg

The Scene
Housing one of the largest art collections in the South in an imposing classical building, the museum surprises many visitors with the breadth and depth of its permanent collection as well as the first-rate touring exhibitions it attracts. Allow plenty of time to admire ancient, classical, art nouveau, art deco, African, Asian, French Impressionist, contemporary and British art as well as the noted Faberge gallery, which includes five Russian Imperial Easter eggs.

The Collection

Works of Degas, Goya, Sargent and Tiffany are on display, as well as a splendid contemporary collection (Picasso, Close, Oldenberg, Warhol and Lichtenstein) in the modern wing. There's also Fast Forward--a performance art series highlighting unusual acts like Laurie Andeson or Dael Orlandersmith. Jumpin' is a weekly concert series/party with different styles of music held in the sculpture garden and often frequented by a young, hip crowd.

My mother in law and I visited the museum when she was here visiting last year and the exhibits there are just as goood if not better than some of the museums from Chicago or anywhere else.
