Best Place to hear Geriatric 70's Music.
Twice I have moved away fro Richmond fo years at a time. And guess what when I got back Babbe's was playting the SAME OLD SAD music. It is like a step into the twilight zone. Welcome to the 21st century please. And for Gawd's sake it is not the L Word so stop dressing like it. You women are not that hot. And what is with this little skater boy look? Must we all dress and act alike.
Now don't get me started on all the little "cliques". Women here are not the friendliest I've ever met. Thank Gawd I've known Vicki since before time. It's the only reason to show up for those watered down drinks. So if ya dig this throw on the flannel, comb the mullet and dance your heart away.
Thursday night in Carytown.
Vicky runs a great little establishment in Carytown and has now for some time. It sits on the corner of Auburn and Cary Street and Carytown. Parking is ample and well-lit, and the drinks are cheap. Erin and Liz do a nice job behind the bar although they aren't the fastest bartenders in town....The interior is getting a little rundown and the place is in dire need of a makeover, but I wouldn't call it dirty, just old and dated.
My main criticism is that DJ Eric and Trampolina play wayyyy too much hip-hop on Thursdays. Babes could use a "real" DJ abnd not just someone pushing buttons up there. Also, what's with the ridiculous rule of "no requests after midnight"?
Live music and lunchtime crowds define this alternatively hip lesbian bar..
The Bar
During the day, lunchtime revelers pack it in while take-out orders of home-cooked meals fly out with hungry haste. At nighttime Babe's becomes what Richmonders hope, fear and imagine it to be: an alternatively hip lesbian bar. The beauty of this place is that every type of lifestyle is welcome--as one of the city's best places to see live music, it's a shame for anyone to be excluded.
The Live Music Scene
Think Babe's is too small to attract a crowd? Think again. The main bar area has the typical booths and tables, but another oversized room holds a stage and has enough room for a large number of live music fans. Regardless of your lifestyle, you'll feel comfortable in this smoky, relaxed but loud spot. The bar is no-nonsense, clean and attracts everyone from hard-core lesbians to straight-laced music lovers.
Thur Night Is The Night. If you are looking for a fun, mixed crowd, go on Thursday nights when it is most packed and fun. Other nights that are fun are Drag Volleyball and Sunday night drag show. The rest is mostly for women but I do recommend the more mixed Thursday nights when the crowd is young and hip and mixed. Food is good and cheap!
Good Dancing, good fun. This place offers many booths and a large dance floor that fills up around 12:30-1:00. It also has a few pool tables and a volleyball sand pit for the warm nights. The DJ's are pretty good. You know you'll always hear some Melissa Ferrick at some point, it's enevitable. The scene has mostly women. Thursday nights are 18 and up. All else 21.
