Editorial Review for Landmark Theater – by Judi Goldenberg
The Scene
Richmonders still call it the Mosque, but when this theater, built in 1928 for the Shriners Acca Temple, was renovated in 1995, it was officially renamed the Richmond Landmark Theater. The ornate architecture, inspired by Moslem temples, gets its vaguely Eastern flavor from the two tall spirals (helpful if you find yourself lost in the busy surrounding Fan District neighborhood) and the colorful murals and tiles from Spain, Italy and Tunisia. The theater itself seats over 3,500, congenially combining size and acoustics.
What to See
National touring companies of Broadway shows stop here in the Broadway Under the Stars series, as do visiting artists appearing with the Richmond Symphony in its Pops series. Garrison Keillor broadcast his radio show from the Mosque.
