Lauded for its beauty, peacefulness and pure historic value, Hollywood Cemetery is a Richmond treasure..
Overview
Situated on a bluff overlooking the James, this Richmond landmark attracts visitors simply because of its historic value and scenic charm. It also offers one of the best vantage points of the James River. Who's buried here: This cemetery is home to the graves of two U.S. Presidents (James Monroe and John Tyler) and the President of the Confederacy (Jefferson Davis), as well as Generals J.E.B. Stuart and George Pickett and author Ellen Glasgow.
The View
Follow the blue line past the Confederate officers' section, past the famous and to the chapel's magnificent river views or, better yet, follow the carriage tracks that still crisscross the grounds and imagine you are strolling in a past century. Make sure you dress for the weather, since there are very few places to escape the heat (or the rain). Comfortable shoes are also a good idea.
A must for Cival War buffs. while in Richmond, I always took visitors here. Three preidents(yes, us southerners count Jefferson Davis) are buried here,as are Generals Jeb Stuart and George Pickett. A great place to spend a quiet afternoon, especially for the physically impaired. The driving tour covers all the notables except the tombs of Presidents Monroe and Tyler. this requires a short walk. Best of all, it's free.
