Editorial Review for Sticky Rice – by Carter Trumbo

The Scene
Expect an unconventional crowd at any restaurant that serves everything from sushi to tater tots. Bright red walls and white paper lanterns welcome a continuous parade of pierced parts, blue hair, babies, backpackers and a strong Oriental population from lunch til the late-night closing. Tuesday night Karaoke brings a more boisterous bunch, and the small but superb sushi bar adds a touch of drama.

The Food
Amazingly, both the American and the Japanese menu items work well. The meat loaf dinner resembles Mom's at first glance, but the Shiitake mushroom gravy and Wasabi mashed potatoes give it an Oriental edge. The 7-spice pork dinner is one of the healthiest versions in town. Pork loin slow cooked in special spices and served with sticky rice and sautéed snow peas takes minimalism to magnificent heights. Order just one slice of Feed the Rich pie for the entire table—more than one fork full will seem like overkill. Mango with plum honey is seasonal but worth the wait.

I've traveled the world and when i come home, one of the places i crave is sticky... The bottom 2 reviews are totally wrong, yes it gets a lil loud, but if you can't handle it your to old, and LEAVE! The staff is lovely, just don't rub them the wrong way, as in any restaurant, they might be rude but only because they have to put up with you, and you probably deserve it. I love going there, the owners are the most liked men in all of richmond, and that means alot if you've ever meet a restaurant owner! The sushi is delightful and there are always specials, how can you go wrong with fried sushi, dee lish!!!! The beverage selection is great, a beer for everyone, warm and cold sake. Always your favorite flavor vodka to finish the night. I love this place, and anyone who is anyone will always come back to a ol faithful place. Fresh Food with Fresh Faces.

Pros: Unique staff, and food

Cons: none

Sticky Rice is simply put one of, if not the worst, sushi restaurant in Richmond. The atmosphere is horrendous, it's impossible at times to get a table because of the bar patrons, the service can be vary incredibly per visit, and the music is cranked up so loud you can barely speak. The sushi itself is sub-par, and I've found most people who praise Sticky Rice's menu simply haven't eaten elsewhere. The portions are meager as well, especially for the price. Richmond residents are better off dining at Nara's Sushi on Main which has better food at lower prices, or Akida on Robinson which has superior food and a wonderful environment. It is unfair to try and portray Sticky Rice as a sushi restaurant, because it isn't. It's a bar that is packed nightly with college students and punkers, and also attempts to serve sushi. Sticky Rice is enjoyable for those who want to go get smashed, and find the idea of eating sushi and tater tots at the same time exciting. For anyone who wants to spend their hard earned money on an enjoyable meal, Sticky Rice is not the place to go.
