Richmond >Kuba Kuba
Great Cuban Food.... Kuba Kuba was a great dining experience. It's intimate, energetic, and the scents from the kitchen permeate the air in a wonderful way. If you're looking for good Cuban food (I had the roast pork & it was excellent), good portions, and a fun atmosphere, look no further. You may have to wait for a bit, but it's most definitely worth it. The only criticism that I have is that the Tres Leches cake was not a Tres Leches cake at all. It was just a regular vanilla cake slice (though generous) with overly sweet frosting on top and a few dallops of whipped cream. I asked the waitress about this and she simply replied, "Oh, mami and papi are out of town, that's probably a day old." What a bizarre comment, right? Well, I wish I had been told that it was a day old in advance or just not a Tres Leches cake because I could have put those calories toward something else...
My favorite place when visiting Richmond. I come to Richmond once every 2-3 months and ALWAYS make sure I dine at KK. It's a hole in the wall, small, bad seating, hot place and I love it. I travel most of the South East US (Carolinas/VA/TN/GA) and KK is by far the best Cuban food north of S Florida. The tres leche cake is awesome. The Cuban sandwich is great, and the specials are unbelievable. I'm from Charlotte NC and I wish there was a place like KK near home.
We Felt Unwelcome. I have always loved this restaurant. But when we showed up for brunch yesterday, we were waiting for one member of our party and the staff was refusing to seat us, even though the restaurant was over half empty. When we finally said that perhaps our final member was not coming, the waiter quizzed several of us, asking "are you sure he's not coming," and "will you be ready to order as soon as you're seated?" We were asked this last question THREE times before he seated us. So much for a leisurely brunch of chatting and catching up with friends. The service was fine once we were seated, but we felt frazzled and harrassed by then.
Kids run amok, and that's the staff.
Staff does a poor job covering the front door/hostess stand. Stood around expecting one of the several employees who saw me, to come over to seat me. One finally did ask, but went away after I told her. Came to learn they had stopped seating 10 minutes earlier. A young kid claiming to be the manager defended the other staffs' behavior.
Only visit, staff seems immature and poorly trained.
my favorite restaurant in richmond. This place has great food at affordable prices. The fried plantains round off any meal well. The cafe con leche is wonderful, especially with a slice of tres leche cake.
Satisying cravings for Cuban food..
For a Southern city, Richmond certainly has its share of Cuba-lovers. From the food to the cigars to the music, the Cuban fever that seems to be sweeping the rest of the country has found its way to Richmond as well. Kuba-Kuba in the Fan satisfies those cravings for Cuban food and music. The paella is a favorite here, and it comes in bountiful servings. The space on scenic Park Avenue has been transformed from what used to be a pharmacy into a bright and cheerful, Latin eatery. It's a great spot for people-watching, as VCU students and downtown dwellers mingle to the Cuban rhythms that accompany the fare. A little bit of Havana is yours when you taste Kuba's Cuban coffee, a rich aromatic blend that will wake you up if the music doesn't.
Richmond's best option. Kuba Kuba is Richmond's best option for Cuban food. Large portions of authentic preparations, served in a bodega-like atmosphere. A very pleasant experience (if a little hot sometimes), and well worth whatever wait you encounter.
Deja Vu and the Espresso.... Being Cuban-born and New England grown, I was surprised to find this excellent eatery in the Heart of the Confederacy. For a while I felt in Habana Vieja in my childhood, with pictures of girls celebrating their "quince" and the brighty painted walls. Food was absolutely fantastic. At 8:30 PM and endured only a 10-minute wait. The Paella Valenciana was succulent, and my other guest had pork sirloin stuffed with Chorizo, also to die for... The owner, who told me was from the Province of Camaguey, was very affable and concerned about every one getting top quality food.
News Flash: Best Espresso in Richmond. Yes, I give this place a 10. Not only is the food and service excellent, but it is also the best espresso joint in all of Richmond. If only it would open its doors at 6 AM instead of 9 AM.
Outstanding. Kuba-Kuba has great Cuban food and that wonderful cake! The atmosphere is wonderful too. It could use more room or take reservations, however.
