Best Barbecue in Richmond, hands down, period.
by Alwayspeakn at Citysearch
This is your "hole in the wall", great food, local favorite joint. PQ's has been serving some of the best barbecue, ribs that go beyond finger licking, brunswick stew how it should be, and veggies this side of the mason-dixon and it won't hurt my families feelings if it stays one of the best kept secrets around town.
Our neighborhood gets together every year and has used these guys to cater our annual event. They bring all the supplies, including this massive double decker grill, and cook a whole hog on site. Chances are if you been to an event around town that served awesome barbecue, it came from PQ's.
- Pros: good service, friendly, best comfort food ever!
- Cons: NONE
Terrible! Don't waste you're time or money

I went with my wife and 2 young daughters. I ordered the ribs & bbq pork combo meal ($18). with Baked beans and cole slaw. The ribs were fatty and grissly and there was no spectacular taste that everyone is talking about. You'll have better ribs at TGI Fridays. The bbq pork was average and once again nothing to write home about. My wife had the ribs too and agreed with my findings. I ordered 12 additional hushpuppies, as only 2 come with each meal. They were the only thing that actually came out "hot". They tasted good, but more like a fried donut than an authentic hushpuppy. My first taste of cole slaw tasted like Bactine. I'm not sure if it was a combination of the bbq sauce meeting the cole slaw or what, but it was certainly an odd taste. If it were not for the extra 12 hushpuppies we ordered, I would have left hungry. Our bill, with tip was $60.00!! Not a cheap meal when you consider you could go to Outback for that price. Plus, the meal came out in about 3 minutes, so you know it's all just sitting back there. The service was very good and the wait staff very friendly. The unsweet tea was good too.
Those who say this is great BBQ are probably people that think they can get a good sub in Virginia too. Well, sorry folks, you can't. I was looking soo forward to finding a great BBQ place close to home. I'll keep trying and post about it when I find it.
If you're hell bent on trying this place, go slow and go cheap and just get a bbq sandwich. Stay away from the ribs. If you have to drive more thn 10 miles to get to this place, it's time to re-think your dinner plans!
- Pros: Non Smoking
- Cons: Only accepts cash
Don't depend on them to be open. Call ahead... Way ahead....

I love this place. My problem is that they are hardly ever open when I plan parties and need them. They have lost a lot of business from me just because I can't depend on them to be open. Barbeque is a dish that people like to serve for special celebrations and if they aren't open then it is a big let down. I was just reading the review and I agree that is kind of rude to not let people be seated if they arrive before closing time. Both of these complaints lead the customer to feel like they are not all that important to the owners. Seems like the owners after all this time should have people they can trust to run the place when the owners are on vacation.
Wonderful BBQ

We eat here often and are never disappointed. Not at all fancy. Just good, friendly service, good food, reasonably priced. Certainly a local favorite!
Don't go late!

Very good barbecue, worth the trip, but I'd prefer regular fries to the waffle variety. HOWEVER, they say they're open until 8:00 pm, but I was refused a seat at 7:30 because they were going to close soon! If you say you're open til 8, STAY OPEN UNTIL 8! I'll miss the good barbecue.
- Pros: Good barbecue
- Cons: Won't serve within a half hour of closing; down-home style, but regulars are treated better
