Greatly Disappointed - Cafeteria food at the Cafe

by Feed me at Citysearch

I had wanted to stop by for several years and finally did for my Birthday with the family.

We started with appetizer of Fried Green Tomatoes (Adults) and mozarella sticks for the kids. The Green tomatoes were good, the mozarella sticks appeared to be the same as any I could buy in the frozen section at a grocery store but kids seemed to like them anyway.

The meal quickly went down hill. My son and I had had ribs which did not have any depth of flavor. They tasted as if they just salt and peppered and then boiled. I doused them in a decent sauce for some flavor. I also had the beef BBQ on the combo plate and it was awful. I had two bites and stopped. Tough meat, little flavor.

My wife had a seafood grill sampler ($25) which was supposed to have shrimp, scallops and a crab cake. There were no scallops instead replaced by tilapia. The crab cake was OK the shrimp barely edible.

The other two kids had Hamburgers which seemed to be the best value

The place tasted like cafeteria food with an expensive price tag.

  • Pros: The hush puppies were good
  • Cons: Main courses below average

The best BBQ in central Virginia!

by nnwwhh at Citysearch

The Houndstooth has, hands down, the best pulled pork BBQ within 100 miles of Richmond and their desserts are killer! Take a ride and don't miss historic Hanover Courthouse where Patrick Henry tried cases and drank in the Tavern across the street.

  • Pros: BBQ, Quaint, quiet
  • Cons: too few tables

Houndstooth Cafe

This small out-of-the-way restaurant is worth the trip to historic Hanover, VA! My family has enjoyed consistently delicious BBQ, ribs, and seafood. Who would have thought seafood would be so good so far from the ocean? Weekend evenings usually have folks waiting on the "homey" front porch for a table--some enjoying a glass of refreshment--so go early. Go hungry also, because the portions are very generous.
